The Tobias Registry is the national Swedish register of healthy potential donors of blood stem cells. The register was established in 1992 and got its name in memory of Tobias Storch who died of a blood disease on December 30, 1991 at the age of 17, sadly, no match for Tobias could be found

Every day someone in Sweden is being diagnosed with blood cancer or some other blood disorder, which has to be treated with blood stem cells. Leukaemia is the most common, however there are many others and blood stem cells transplantation can be the best or only hope for a cure, when nothing else works.

Only one quarter of patients are lucky enough to find a suitable donor among their relatives. Everybody else has to find a suitable donor in registries like Tobiasregistret. The problem is that quite literally there is one chance in a million of finding an appropriate donor. As a result, approximately one patient in three dies. For 30% there is no appropriate donor in the registry.

 Once you have found a suitable match, stem cells can be extracted from the donor, usually via the blood. In some cases, however, a doctor may take cells from the back of your pelvic bone. And if everything works as it should, the sick person will make a recovery.

We are currently looking for donors aged between 18 and 35. If you are too old to be a donor yourself, you can help us by spreading the word about the registry.

If you are between 18 and 35, sign up as a donor. Within a few days you will receive a swabbing kit by post. Simply swab your cheek and send the sample back to us. Once we have received your sample, it will be sent on for further analysis. You are now in the Tobiasregistret until you turn 60.
